⭐ A Gather Around: A Step-By-Step Modelling Script
A step-by-step guide for WAGOLL+ members on how to use Gather Arounds to demonstrate processes and events for primary children
💡 The Big Idea
Sometimes in teaching, instead of modelling at the front, bringing children together around a central focus is better. A Gather Around is a simple strategy where pupils physically gather around a table, space, or demonstration to observe something meaningful, intriguing, or beautiful together.
It’s perfect for moments where:
A process or event can’t (or shouldn’t) be broken down into small parts.
The experience itself (watching, wondering, noticing) is the learning.
You want to spark curiosity, focus attention, or make something memorable.
Gather Around works because it taps into joint attention, social learning, and our natural human response to shared experiences. These are the moments children remember - the wow moments that stick. The episodic memory that knowledge can be built upon.
👀 A Closer Look: The Script for Gather Around
Here’s your step-by-step script to bring Gather Around to life in your classroom:
Step 1: Set the Space
Arrange the focal point: This could be a table, tray, floor area, or outdoor spot.
Create clear boundaries: Use a rope, tape, cones, or floor markers to show children where to sit, kneel, or stand.
Consider visibility: Think about height and positioning.
Prepare resources: Have everything you need within reach before you call the children over.
